How to stay motivated with exercise. Tips for the New Year
January 12th, 2012 by Barbara MossHow to stay motivated with exercise
It can be very difficult to stay motivated with exercise over a long period of time, which is why many people start an exercise program, only to give up after a few weeks.
Below, are a few tips, which I hope you will find useful.
- Remember, exercise is for life so you need to be disciplined. If you wait until you feel like it you will never do it. Getting to a class is the hard bit, and you will usually feel much better after the session
- If you want to lose, or control your weight, you need aerobic exercise together with some specific conditioning work, to see results.
- Be patient, don’t be obsessed with the scales but concentrate on feeling better with yourself, as you become fitter, and the rest will come later. You should feel fitter in about 6 weeks.
- Don’t try too much too soon. If you are new to exercise and you start working out every day, you will get burnt out and feel like giving up. Start with one or two sessions per week and build up gradually.
- If you always attend the same class- maybe try a change, but remember if you move on to a more advanced class it will be hard going for the first few weeks. Be patient- set your own goals and progress gradually.
- Remember, if it’s too easy too soon, it’s usually not worth doing.
- Try and be as active as possible generally. Always think about your posture in your daily life, as this will not only help the way you look but also help with back and shoulder problems, etc.
- If you are trying to lose weight try to exercise at last 3 times per week. Regular exercise is no good on its own, you need to watch what you eat as exercising can also make you hungry!
- Sometimes, you will have a bad night and feel despondent-it is normal, keep at it and the next time hopefully you will enjoy it more.
- Finally, if you need any advice about your exercise programme, please feel free to speak either to myself or Lisa or Natalie.

October 2nd, 2011 by Barbara MossSensei Foster visited our dojo every year in October to teach a weekend course. Sadly he is no longer with us and so this years’ course will be instructed by two of Sensei’s most senior students, Frank Burlingham and William Timms. The course is a tribute to Sensei Foster who we miss greatly at Yama Arashi.
The training times are as follows:
Saturday 15th October 2pm-6pm
Sunday 16th October 10.30-12.30
Dan Gradings 2011
October 2nd, 2011 by Barbara MossThe Yama Arashi UK Dan Gradings were held at the dojo on Sunday 18th September. This traditional annual event began with a two hour training session on Friday evening, with another four hours on Saturday afternoon. Friday evening was instructed by Barbara, with the Saturday sessions shared with the other 5th Dans, Grev Cooke, Brian Kennedy and Ric Costigan.
The weekend was very well attended, with Coventry members and members from YA Stratford and members from Milton Keynes. It was a pleasure to see Dean from Scotland, who travelled down as normal and brought three of his students for their first visit to our dojo.( Dean is our camera man who seems to bring more photography equipment every year!)
There were three 1st Dan Gradings this year, Steven Barnett, who started Aikido as a junior member at 12 years old, so has been practicing at the club for ten years, Chris Cox and Toby Quosh, a student from Ric’s club at Stratford.
The 2nd Dans were Mark Burton, Jake Irwin and Dennis Younge. All were successful, which made for a very pleasant meal afterwards at The Bell and an evening back at the club. This was rounded off with Marianne demonstrating her excellent belly dancing skills to us, with a few brave souls joining in to have a go. Photos to follow soon!
Very well done to all and my thanks to all those who helped out over the weekend.
