Dan Gradings 16th-18th September 2016

Monday, September 26th, 2016

Congratulations to all those promoted at the recent Dan Grading. Unfortunately there were two members who sustained injuries close to the weekend so were unable to grade. This was very disappointing for them but hopefully they will both be back training before too long. We have two new 1st dans and two new 2nd dans. Dean Simpson from Scotland Yama Arashi was promoted to 3rd Dan and Steve Thompson and Colin Garner were awarded 5th Dan. All gradings very well deserved.

We all had a very enjoyable weekend with lots of training before Sunday. It was a pleasure to catch up with friends who took the trouble to travel to share the weekend with us and also Dean’s members, Neil and Emma from Glasgow. 50 of us celebrated at the Holiday Inn Stratford upon Avon afterwards.

My thanks to everyone who supported the weekend to make it a special one and to the instructors for their hard work during the last months.

Photos will be in the gallery at a later date.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015

The Y.A.U.K traditional annual Dan Gradings took place at the Phoenix, last weekend.

We all took part in Friday night and Saturday afternoon training with the gradings held on Sunday morning.

A really enjoyable weekend, meeting up and training with old friends together with social get togethers.

A comparatively small grading this time but a very happy one, with all successful in being promoted.

Congratulations to Jake, 3rd Dan, Joanne 2nd Dan and our new 1st Dan Liam. Well done for all your hard work in

preparing for this special event.

We celebrated at Nailcote Hall in the afternoon. A great weekend. My thanks to all concerned.

Dan grading Weekend September 2014

Sunday, October 19th, 2014

The Yama Arashi Dan Grades are the highlight of the Club and are held every September. The weekend started with a 2-hour course taken by Sensei Barbara on the Friday evening. The candidates for second Dan (Rod Meechan and Paul Totterdell) also demonstrated a few techniques. A few of us then headed down the local pub for some refreshments. On Saturday we trained from 2-6pm with the teaching shared between Senseis Barbara, Ric and Brian; and again after the course we headed down the local pub, albeit a different one… Then the big day arrived. Whilst Barbara and a few helpers got the place ready by putting chairs outside for the audience and laying some drinks and snacks in the other room, Istvan ensured the big mat was swept clean and carried out his usual inspection. This year, there were two candidates for Nidan (Rod and Paul) though none for Shodan. So we had a bit of a practice and then the gradings kicked off. They were to demonstrate many techniques, open-handed, with the Boken and the Jo, as well as the usual keiko. After a few tense minutes when the panel convened in another other room (no… not the one with the drinks and snacks!), the candidates were relieved to be informed they had both passed. But there was more to come! After awarding both Paul and Rod with their second Dan, Sensei Barbara announced that more gradings would be awarded. And the first one was Charlie Reid who was awarded his third Dan. Charlie provided a lot of support to the Club over the past few years covering the Tuesday class. A few months ago, he had to undergo some surgery and was back on the mat well before the doctors had recommended, to Chrissie’s delight as apparently he is not a good patient! Mike Mitchell from Keihatsu Aikido Club Milton Keynes, was also awarded his third Dan, for all the hard work he has put into the running of the Club and for providing support to Kevan Poundes. And there was one more… It seems odd since I am writing this article, but the final grading of the day was awarded, well, to me! I feel extremely humble to have been awarded my fourth Dan and iIn all honesty it still hasn’t sunk in After a few photos, we all headed to the Holiday Inn in Stratford for a 3-course meal. The food was very nice indeed and there was a lovely big garden which backed on to the river. And without fail, the sun was out as it always is every year we hold this very special weekend.

Friendship Course 15th/16th March

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Friendship course 15th and 16th March 2014, Coventry.

After a hassle-free journey thanks to fast and powerful cars and the Eurotunnel crossing, Sensei Citti, Hauzeur and Thielemans, joined by his wife, and Quentin, were greeted by Barbara Moss, 6th Dan and Principal of Yama-Arashi Coventry. With her were a few Dan Grades, including Ric Costigan, 5th Dan, instructor at Yama-Arashi Coventry and founder of Yama-Arashi in Stratford-upon-Avon. Sensei Roget Hannoset, also instructor at Yama-Arashi Budo College Belge, was meant to be part of this congregation from Belgium but had to cancel at the last minute due to stomach flu.

Over the weekend, the above instructors (Citti, Costigan, Hauzeur, Moss and Thielemans) as well as Brian Kennedy, 5th Dan, taught various techniques to around 40 dan grades and kyu grades. It was under the umbrella of friendship that an exchange of opinions on how to execute a technique was held, which everyone found very interesting. The atmosphere was cheerful and humorous. We could all appreciate the excellent work on the mat and in particular Barbara Moss’ whose aikido is fluid, round, effective and beautiful to watch.

Saturday evening we went to a Chinese restaurant and on Sunday evening to a traditional pub. The hotel we spent the 3 nights in was perfect with a swimming pool, sauna, gym, etc. We were definitely spoilt.

This friendship course ended with Barbara Moss handing out beautiful gifts; there was even one, engraved, for Roger Hannoset. We also had an emotional thought for Tom Moss, Barbara’s deceased husband and founder of the Club. A symbolic thought from his students is that they have left Tom’s black belt hanging in the corner of the changing room where he would get changed. This weekend spent together will stay with us forever, in our minds and our hearts.

Thank you very much, Barbara and all the members from Yama-Arashi Coventry.

Mr Tony Thielemans
